Dallas public records span a wide range of document types. The city keeps records through the City Secretary's office at City Hall, 1500 Marilla Street. You can reach them at 214-670-3111. Dallas County maintains court files, property deeds, and vital records at the county level. State agencies hold records for Dallas residents too, including driver history and criminal records kept by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Dallas City Hall website links to all city departments and services. For public information requests, all emailed requests must go to publicinfo@dallasci.dallas.tx.us. You can also submit requests through the Public Information Request Portal. Hand delivery goes to Police Department headquarters or the City Secretary's Office. The city has 10 business days to respond under state law.

Dallas Police Department Records

The Dallas Police Department Open Records Unit is at 1400 Botham Jean, Dallas, Texas 75215. The customer service phone number is 214-671-3345. You can get police reports in person, by mail, or online through TxDOT.

For in-person requests, visit the customer service window at 1400 Botham Jean. You need the name of the person involved, the accident location, and the date. A Police Service Number helps if you have it. The fee is $6 for a copy of the police report. By mail, send a written request to the Open Records Unit at the same address. Include a money order for $6 and all the accident details you have.

Note that fax requests are no longer accepted as of September 2019. The Texas Legislature changed the Public Information Act through Senate Bill 944, and Dallas updated its process to match.

Online crash reports are available through the TxDOT Crash Records Information System. The system is open seven days a week, around the clock. Reports usually show up after 14 days. A standard copy costs $6, and a certified electronic copy is $8.

Dallas County Sheriff Records

If the Dallas County Sheriff responded to an incident outside city limits, those records go through the sheriff's office. The location is the Frank Crowley Courts Building, 133 North Riverfront Boulevard, First Floor, Dallas, Texas. Mail requests go to the Dallas County Sheriff's Department, Attention: Fiscal, 133 North Riverfront Boulevard, LB-31, Dallas, Texas 75207-4313. The fee is $6. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your written request and all the details about the incident.

Dallas Municipal Court Residents Directory

The Dallas Municipal Court is at 2014 Main St, Dallas, TX 75201. Call 214-670-0109 for help. The Court and Detention Services Department is the Official Clerk of the Court of Record. It oversees all administrative and clerical functions for the municipal court.

Online citation and docket search is available on the court website. You can search by last name, citation number, docket number, or PD case number. It may take up to 10 business days for a citation to show up in the system. Some citations are not available for online payment, such as those tied to family violence or juvenile cases.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Extended hours run until 6:00 PM on Tuesdays. A convenience fee of up to $3.50 applies for online payments. The Dallas Marshal's Office handles warrant services for the court.

The municipal court is a court of record. That means appeals are based on the record made in the original case. This is different from non-record municipal courts, where appeals get a whole new trial.

Dallas County Court System

Dallas County runs district courts for civil, criminal, and family cases. These are housed in the George L. Allen, Sr. Courts Building at 600 Commerce Street, Dallas, TX 75202. County Courts at Law handle appeals from JP Courts and non-record municipal courts. These are trials de novo, meaning a fresh start.

Justice of the Peace Courts handle small claims up to $20,000, eviction cases, traffic matters, and Class C misdemeanors. These are not courts of record. The Texas Judicial Branch runs the re:SearchTX system that covers court records across all Texas counties. You can also check the Texas voter registration site for voter records.

Dallas City Secretary Records

The Dallas City Secretary is the official custodian of city records. The office is at City Hall, 1500 Marilla Street. Phone is 214-670-3111. The City Secretary handles council meeting agendas and minutes, ordinances and resolutions, elections, and board and commission records. The municipal code is maintained through this office as well.

Building permits, inspections, and development records are handled through the Sustainable Development Department. You can look up permit status online through the development services page.
